Botswana introduced the fingerprint-based Omang system in the late 1990s. In July 2023 the labour and home affairs minister said an electronic Omang with photo verification was being developed and would connect to service providers. A border control system at all ports of entry links to the national identification system. No 2025-2026 launch of the electronic card was found.
