Madagascar is enrolling its population in a World Bank-funded biometric unique ID (NUI), which passed 5.6 million people by June 2026. The central bank launched a pilot of the e-Ariary digital currency in 2025.

The Prodigy project (World Bank-funded) launched biometric enrolment on 27 January 2026, collecting fingerprints, iris and a photo, and issuing each person a lifelong unique number. Enrolment reached 5.6 million by late June 2026; the project's end was set for 30 June, with registration allowed to continue to year end. Officials estimate 12 to 13 million people will eventually be registered.

The central bank (Banky Foiben'i Madagasikara) officially launched the e-Ariary in 2025 as an experimental phase, planned to run with mobile money operators and banks. Vendor eCurrency announced on 29 Oct 2025 that its pilot phase was starting.
