The central bank studied CBDC with Cenfri from 2019, which found a retail CBDC strongest. In October 2024 it hired Giesecke+Devrient to examine a Digital Lilangeni as a complement to cash. HRF's tracker describes proof-of-concept work; timing is unclear.
