The Bank of Ghana's January 2026 guidance, effective immediately, made the Ghana Card the only accepted ID for all financial transactions; people without one cannot transact. Digital channels need a liveness check. Exceptions cover short-stay non-residents and Ghanaians abroad using passports temporarily. Earlier, the card was required for SIM registration; a 2022 High Court ruling went in favour of the regulator.

A pilot with about 2,750 participants ran in 2022; a report was published Oct 2024. In February 2025 the bank said a retail launch was expected in 2025 if legislation passed; in November 2025 it reaffirmed its commitment. No launch date is confirmed.
