Greece issues compulsory ID cards, and its new biometric-era cards are replacing the old blue card; over 4.15 million were issued by 31 July 2026. Digital documents on gov.gr wallet are valid inside Greece but not for travel. As a euro-area member it falls under the digital euro project.

Since early August 2026 the old blue police ID is no longer accepted for foreign travel, including Schengen, because it lacks a machine-readable zone; it stays valid for identification inside Greece. The ministry cut service time from 22 to 14 minutes and added 28% more appointments. I did not find a primary source on gov.gr Wallet use figures.
