Indonesia has a compulsory biometric e-KTP ID and launched the IKD smartphone ID in May 2024. Since January 2026 the IKD app is the only way to verify ID document authenticity. Bank Indonesia's Project Garuda is still at the wholesale experiment stage.

The e-KTP is a biometric smartcard issued to over 170 million residents and tied to the NIK number. IKD, a phone app, launched in May 2024. From January 2026, the page says scans by other apps are no longer verified automatically. Civil society groups raise privacy and data-breach risks.

Bank Indonesia published its white paper in November 2022. A proof-of-concept report in December 2024 marked completion of phase one for a wholesale model. It plans to test wholesale CBDC with digital securities.
