The UID system, built on MOSIP, is required for passports, border crossings, SIM registration, bank accounts and pensions. A tender for a National e-ID Smart Card Pilot for FY 2026-2027 targets 110,000 cards plus a mobile ID wallet. On 5 March 2026 authorities announced mandatory IMEI registration with a deadline of 31 March 2026.
